Google Pixel 7
Is the Google Pixel 7 your best choice for Android in 2022?
Google's next pair of premium devices are now available in Australia. There are two flagship models this year; the Google Pixel 7 and the premium Pixel 7 Pro. Which one is right for you?

Joining the iPhone club has never been the cheapest experience, but it doesn’t need to break the bank either. To help you find the right iPhone plan for you, we’ve done all the hard work to find the best plans for every type of user, whether you’re after the newest iPhone 14 or happy to settle for an older model.

To keep costs as low as we can for people who want the latest, we’re using the iPhone 14 128GB as our comparison model (unless noted otherwise), paid over 36 months. The first thing you might notice is the abundance of Vodafone plans on this page (and often the same Vodafone plan). That's simply because Vodafone's deals are hard to beat for iPhone 14, and that what's the best plan for iPhone 14, is typically the best plan for iPhone 13, 12, 11 and so on.

If you’d prefer an iPhone 13, we've listed the best plan available for last year's handset too. But if you'd prefer any other model, simply click the ‘Go’ button next to your preferred plan and change your device selection on the telco’s website.

Let’s go.

Vodafone's $45 Small Plan takes the top place as the iPhone plan to beat in multiple categories. Not just because it's the cheapest plan iPhone plan available but because it includes unlimited calls and text, 40GB of monthly data (and infinite 2Mps capped data after that) and a few nice perks, such as three free months of Apple TV+.

Here's that same plan with iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Not quite what you're looking for? Here's a small selection of other popular iPhone 14 plans that Australians are choosing.

Vodafone $45 Small Plan + iPhone 13 128GB

Yes, once again Vodafone's $45 Small Plan is the best choice, even for last year's iPhone 13 128GB which is even cheaper after a recent post-iPhone 14 discount.

You get all the perks and benefits listed above when you choose the iPhone 13, just at a much cheaper price (almost as cheap as the iPhone SE).  Telstra and Optus are still stocking the iPhone 13 128GB too. Take a look at the plans below for a glance at some of the most popular options available.

The three big providers – Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone – don’t tie you down with Postpaid plan contracts these days. But while their plans don’t have contracts, you’re still obliged to pay off your new iPhone handset (or any other brand handset) if you choose to leave ahead of your device-repayment term. Device-repayment terms tend to be separated into 12 months, 24 months, and 36 months. While 12-month and 24-month terms are shorter than the 36-month term, they’re incrementally more expensive, with 12 being the most expensive per month, and 36 being the cheapest for monthly device repayments. Still, even though you’re looking at a cheaper monthly bill, if you do commit to a 24-month or 36-month device-repayment term, you’re ultimately paying more if you stick around for the full duration to cover the ongoing combination of plan costs and device repayments (better value plans tend to crop up within these time frames, too). If you exit early, you’ll be charged for the remaining cost of your handset, as set at the beginning of the payment term, which can blow out the perceived savings from paying less per month. Because 24 months is the typical time for upgrading to a new handset, we tend to favour the value of a reasonable repayment commitment and monthly cost found in 24-month device-repayment terms.

pro 5G access
pro Unlimited data
pro Discounted by $25

Cons
con Least amount of network coverage

Vodafone takes out yet another position in our list of the best iPhone plans available but with good reason. There was once a time when there was no such thing as an unlimited mobile data plan but rather recently, Vodafone became one of the first telcos in Australia to offer truly unlimited downloads on a mobile plan.

Most of Vodafone's plans offer an amount of Max Speed Data and unlimited data with capped speeds after that but Vodafone's Ultra plan offers unlimited max speed data with no limit. The plan is currently discounted by $25 per month, as long as you stay connected for your agreed term (24 or 36-month).

Unlimited 5G data is a tempting proposition but the fact remains that Vodafone still offers the smallest mobile network in Australia (not by much, but it's still an obstacle for many Australians).

If you need a lot of data on the Telstra or Optus networks, you can take a look at some of the highest-usage plans on the market below.

Best Telstra iPhone plan

Telstra $72 Essential Upfront Mobile Plan + iPhone 14 128GB

pro 180GB
pro 5G access
pro 2 months of Binge
pro 3 months of Apple TV+
con
Cons
con Speeds capped at 1.5Mbps after 180GB
con A more expensive option

Vodafone might dominate our picks for data and dollar value but at the end of the day, there are still many Australians that rely on Telstra's market-leading coverage to get by. Telstra's Medium Upfront Plan might not be unlimited but it still includes more monthly data than most Australians need, as well as unlimited standard national calls and texts and all the usual Telstra perks, such as Telstra Plus rewards

If you want to tweak your monthly usage, check the table below for more popular iPhone plans through Telstra.

Best Optus iPhone plan

Optus $49 Choice + iPhone 14 128GB

pro
Pros
pro Good network coverage at a decent price
pro 5G access
con
Cons
con Not very competitive
con No deals available
con Only 30GB of monthly data

Optus is the happy middle-ground for all smartphone plans. Optus still offers more coverage than its cheaper competitor Vodafone and isn't quite as expensive as Telstra but this year, its offers aren't very competitive for iPhone 14. It's the only telco not offering any sort of limited-time trade-in deal or other related perks for iPhone users.

Still, if you're committed to Optus for one reason or another, the Optus $49 Choice Plan is our pick out of the lot purely for its cheaper price tag. You don't get quite as much data as you do with the other plans in this list but with handset costs included, it still comes cheaper than any other Telstra plan.

con
Cons
con Just 40GB of data

Even though the iPhone 13 is close to taking this place as the best budget iPhone plan in Australia, the 2022 iPhone SE 64GB is still the cheapest iPhone you can score on a plan in Australia. Currently, the cheapest plan available is, once again, the Vodafone Small Plan, which nets you 40GB of monthly data, unlimited calls and text and $5 per day roaming. At less than $60 per month, the iPhone SE with Vodafone is the cheapest iPhone plan currently available in Australia.

Here's a short sample of iPhone SE plans available in Australia, sorted by monthly price on a 36-month plan arrangement.

Best iPhone 12 plan

iPhone 12 64GB + Optus $49 Choice Plan

Heads Up
Before you proceed

As we've noted below, the iPhone 12 is technically still available through Australian carriers but we'd recommend avoiding purchasing it on a plan. While the price differs between providers, it's sometimes more expensive than the 128GB iPhone 13 on a plan.

pro
Pros
pro Good network coverage at a decent price
pro 5G access
con
Cons
con Not very competitive
con No deals available
con Only 30GB of monthly data
con iPhone 12 not cheap enough to justify

Despite getting a little long in the tooth, the iPhone 12 from 2020 is still available from select carriers in Australia. The issue is that the iPhone 12 currently sits in a tricky place. On a plan, you'll still pay over $1,200 for the handset over 24 or 36 months. In fact, you can get the 128GB iPhone 13 cheaper than the 64GB iPhone 12 through select providers, so it pays to compare your options.

Still, if you're committed to the iPhone 12 for whatever reason, we'd recommend the Optus $49 Choice Plan for a more affordable option or saving yourself some cash in the long run by purchasing a refurbished iPhone 12 outright.

How we choose the best iPhone plan

When looking at the best iPhone plans and deals, we consider cost, perks, data and speed.

We've also used the iPhone 14 128GB paid over a 36-month period as our benchmark for comparison.

Frequently asked questions about iPhone plans

The best iPhone to buy in Australia is the base model of the latest generation. For now, that’s the iPhone 14. You can pay extra for better hardware and larger screens, but we find the newest iPhone base model to have the best mix of performance, future-proofed features and value.

The cheapest way to buy an iPhone is to pair an Apple handset with a plan that has 36-month handset repayments. This results in the cheapest monthly costs, plus you have a plan to use your new iPhone. Still, buying outright may work out cheaper over the long-term (especially if cheaper plans come along), but prices tend to be the same across retailers.

The iPhone SE (2022) is the iPhone with the best value for money. It has a great price, hardware that can keep up with you, a decent camera by today’s standards, and a compact design.
